Most people rank countries at the Olympics either by the number of gold medals they've won or by their total medal count. Ranking by gold medals alone doesn't acknowledge athletes who win silver or bronze, while ranking by total medals diminishes the value of gold medals. To address this, we've come up with a points-based system: 3 points for a gold medal, 2 points for a silver, and 1 point for a bronze.
